Early this morning I learned that one of the all time Masters of Photography has died. At 92 his work helped change the fashion image in a way that's almost impossible for us to comprehend today. Working almost to the end, he leaves a remarkable document of his life's experiences. Very few can ever match him. Sleep well Irving.

So, the world's oldest man dies and my generation and younger don't seem to care. Recently the world went crazy over the demise of Michael Jackson. I was moved by his death, as were most of my friends if Facebook and various bar conversations are to be believed (For the record I was a fan!). This reaction was, to some extent, understandable with the death of a major pop star and the perceived relevance they play in our lives. What I find remarkable, and in some ways alarming, is how few people seem to care about a man who lived for over a century and fought in the bloodiest war the West has ever known. His passing, and with him the loss of his wisdom and life experience, has been marked by a total absence of mention amongst my friends and Facebook network. When I brought it up in conversation at a dinner earlier I got the strangest look. The sacrifice Henry Allingham made, as well as the millions of his comrades who have gone from this earth before him, and the real effect they had on our lives cannot be overestimated. Okay so it turned out not to be "The War To End All Wars", but that shouldn't detract from the great intention they had when fighting it out in the trenches all those years ago. Henry Allingham truly was a great man and, in my opinion, deserves to be honoured as such.
